Welcome!
The European Stroke Organisation (ESO):
The ESO was created from a merger between the European Stroke Council (ESC) and the European Stroke Initiative (EUSI) in 2007. Its membership consists of stroke researchers, national and regional stroke societies, and others with an interest in stroke. Key objectives of the organisation include the development of public policies to reduce the number of stroke-associated deaths and the reduction of the global burden caused by stroke throughout Europe.
In addition to raising the awareness of stroke on a pan-European scale, the ESO will continue to conduct EUSI's previous successful activities. The most important task of the EUSI was to produce European guidelines for the management of ischaemic stroke, which it did in 1999 and 2003, and for haemorrhagic stroke, most recently in 2006. The EUSI ischaemic stroke guidelines have been translated into more than ten languages including Chinese and Russian. The latest update of the ischaemic stroke recommendations were implemented by the ESO in January 2009.
Today, the ESO organises popular stroke summer schools and annual symposia on stroke controversies. It is also sponsoring a European Master of Stroke medicine programme together with Donau University in Krems, Austria and implements standards for stroke care and stroke units in Europe.
The executive committee of the ESO is chaired by Professor Werner Hacke, previously president of both ESC and EUSI. Other executive committee members include Professor Michael Brainin, Austria (Secretary), Professor Didier Leys, France (President elect), Professor Bo Norrving, Sweden, Professor Ken Lees, UK, Professor Veronika Skovortsova, Russia, Professor José Ferro, Portugal, Professor Markku Kaste, Finland and Professor Rolf Schneider, Germany (Treasurer).
